What is their nationality?

The concept of nationality is complicated and varies from country to country. Generally, it refers to the status of belonging to a specific nation, although the definition and legal application of that is open to interpretation.

At its most basic level, nationality can be determined by where a person was born, or where their parents were born, although it gets more complicated when a person has dual citizenship due to having parents from different countries or having multiple nationalities due to immigration or other reasons.

In some countries a person may become a citizen by way of an oath of allegiance, while in others we must acquire citizenship through process such as naturalisation or being born in the respective country. Each country has its own set of laws of citizenship that an individual must abide by in order to fit membership criteria, such as demonstrating loyalty by performing certain duties and/or meeting required residency periods.

Different forms of nationality can also be acquired through marriage or descent from parents or ancestors with nationality in the respective country. For example, individuals may gain citizenship through their spouses if they have been married for at least three years, by having one parent who is a citizen, or even if one's grandparents were born in the respective country with locations depending on the nationality laws present at that particular time period.
